Understanding your Nakshatra

Wednesday, 8 July 2026 · 4 min read

Where Western astrology leans on the Sun sign, Vedic astrology leans on the Moon — and specifically on the nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at your birth. This is your janma nakshatra, and it anchors much of classical practice.

Twenty-seven mansions

The zodiac is divided into twenty-seven nakshatras, each a little over thirteen degrees, and each split further into four padas. Your janma nakshatra and pada are what a Jyotishi uses to compute your Vimshottari dasha — the great planetary periods that time the unfolding of a life.

Tarabalam — the day's rapport

As the Moon travels, its nakshatra each day forms a numbered relationship (tara) with your janma nakshatra. Some are considered supportive, some ask for care. In Sannidhana this appears as a calm daily note — never a warning, simply a sense of the day's grain.

If you don't know your janma nakshatra, it takes only your birth date, time, and place to find. The free kundli tool will show it in seconds.
